Let's talk about these trees.

Cherry blossom trees were brought over here a billion years ago by some foreign guy and planted all around our little city. You can read the more formal history
here. The moral of the story is that each year, we have a giant week-and-a-half long festival to honor these trees.
And the Cherry Blossom Festival is no joke. There's even an official song. "it's cherry blossom timmmmeeee..."
Seriously, people come from all over the WORLD to see these trees.
Luckily, this year, the trees actually bloomed DURING the festival and it didn't torrentially rain to wash them all away...which is what usually happens...
So, the first Friday of the festival, the kids I keep were out of school, so we headed on down to the carnival part of the festival.
It was quite fun!
There are craft fairs, nightly concerts, dog frisbee shows, strong-man competitions, a bed race.
Lots of fun activities.
And the week ends with the street party.
This year, Rodney Atkins played at the street party, and my old drama teacher's band, Stevens Layne opened for him!
But wait!
That's not all!
The rest of the town goes all out for cherry blossom too!
Chick-fil-a has pink ice dreams! (Don't worry, they're still vanilla flavored)
They also sell pink Chick-fil-A cherry blossom t-shirts.
People get cherry blossoms painted on their cars.
Schools go there on field trips.
We have a cherry blossom pageant with a Cherry Blossom Queen.
And tours around town to see the Cherry Blossom trees.
But, while that's all fine and dandy, lets talk about the downfall of the festival...
Like I said earlier, people come from all over the world to see these trees.
Now, yes, the trees are beautiful. and yes there's a ton of them.
But, for those of us who live here, the tourists who drive 5 miles an hour down the road to look at the trees can get old real quick.
Some of us have places to be.
Not to mention, every 30 feet, someone has pulled over to get out of their cars and take pictures.
So while I have fun with all the festivities, I sure am glad to see the festival go because it finally means I can drive at least the speed limit again.
